Key
words: Describing Event, Mobile Phone, Writing.
Writing is a communicative act, a way of
sharing observation, information, thoughts, or ideas with others and ourselves.
Writing is one way of making meaning from experience for ourselves and for
others in the written form. Through writing students will not only be able to
form language, spell words, put together plot but also learn how to make
logical argument and how to persuade. It makes writing become very crucial to
learn more deeply.
However, the
students faced some problems in learning writing. They were lacked interest in
writing because less of media used in teaching writing, and they were lacked
practice because writing gets less proportion in teaching activity. Thus, the
students’ writing achievement is low. Therefore, the researcher offered the integration
of mobile phone to answer that problem. The mobile phone brings the students
closer to the object of their writing so they will be easier to dig the ideas
for their writing. Beside that, the students will be more motivated in writing
because mobile phone is an interesting media for them.
This study used collaborative classroom
action research. The researcher acted as the teacher and the real English
teacher acted as the observer during the teaching and learning process. The
research was conducted in two cycles and covered planning an action,
implementing the action, observing the action, and reflecting on the
observation. The subjects were 40 students of X Accounting 2 in SMK N 1 Pogalan
in the academic year 2010/2011. The instruments used to collect the data were
interview guides, questionnaires, observation checklists, field notes, and the
students’ writing test. In the implementation of mobile phone, the student’s
duty was to answer the researchers’ questions about the event occurring when the
researcher send message, and then the students developed in into a composition
of describing event text. The students’ writing product was scored based on the
scoring rubric, and then it was analyzed and compared with the criteria of
success. In this research the individual criteria of success was 75 and the
class criteria was 85% from the whole students.
The result of the research showed
that there were some improvements in students’ writing achievement. In
preliminary study there were 9 students (22.5%) classified into success, while
the mean score was 65.3. Whereas, from the cycle 1 there were 28 students (70%)
who met the criteria of success, while the mean score was 77.9. In cycle two,
there were 35 students (87.5%) who met the criteria of success, while the mean
score was 83.9.
Learning from
the result, it can be concluded that the implementation of mobile phone could
improve students’ achievement in writing describing event text. Furthermore, it
is suggested to the students to be more motivated in using technological
devices for learning English, not only mobile phone, but also many other kinds
of technology. The teacher also suggested using mobile phone as a media for
teaching another aspect of English. While, for the further researchers, they are
suggested to explore the use of the other features
available in mobile phone. Since in this research the researcher used the
feature of SMS in mobile phone, the future researchers are suggested to use
another feature, such as internet, notes, voice recorder, etc.
